Dr. Chris Lopez (PI)Chris is a California native. He received his Bachelor's degree in Animal Science at UC Davis, where he later stayed to work in the lab of Dr. Andreas Baumler. There, he received a Ph.D. in microbiology studying how pathogenic bacteria acquire nutrients in the intestines. Chris continued in research at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee where he joined the lab of Dr. Eric Skaar as a postdoc. He switched his focus to anaerobic bacteria in the intestines, primarily studying the pathogenesis of Clostridioides difficile (C diff). Chris's lab at CSUS continues to explore how intestinal bacteria survive in the intestines.
When he's not teaching or in the lab, Chris likes to climb, run, and cook. As a microbiologist, he is also greatly interested in the wonders of fermented beverages...Cheers! |

I am from American Canyon and was a transfer student from NVC originally as a health science major with no idea what I wanted to do. All I knew was I wanted to be working in the lab doing what I can to help people. As soon as I found out about the CLS concentration here at CSUS I made the switch. This along with my love for all microbes is what inspired me to join the Lopez lab which I am grateful to be a part of. I look forward to strengthening my skills in the lab as well as my critical thinking as a scientist to help make new discoveries! My project will examine interactions between microbes in fermented cider. |

I am a first generation college student born and raised in Sacramento. I am currently a third year student working towards a Bachelors degree in Biology. Although I am still exploring different career paths, I am interested in Microbiology and Biotechnology. I am very thankful that the Lopez Lab has given me the opportunity to gain laboratory experience. My project in the Lopez Lab is to see how the presence of oxygen affects Clostridia sporulation. |

Kelly Danoff
I was born and raised in Sonoma County, CA. I am currently a senior with a major in CLS and a minor in Chemistry. Before I was CLS major, I was previously a nursing major, but I quickly learned that I had a passion working in a micro lab after taking my first ever Microbiology class. I loved that as a CLS I would be working in a lab, still on my feet and working with my hands, but also helping people behind the scenes. I am very grateful to be working in the Lopez lab to gain laboratory experience so that I can further improve my lab skills. My project in the Lopez lab is developing assays to characterize yeast from fermented cider. |
